What is an engineered wood floor?
On the surface, both look similar. You get beautiful wood floors, texturing, knots, grains, and swirls with either.
Solid hardwood is one slab throughout the entire floor. Like any wood, it can be damaged by excess water and moisture.
When you have solid hardwood flooring, be sure to wipe spills immediately. Also, avoid installing in higher-than-normal moisture areas and put mats strategically at entrances.
Engineered wood has a construction that makes it more stable and better able to handle water. As a result, it can be installed in some areas, like basements, which are not recommended for solid wood floor installation.

Engineered is layered and, at the top, is a slab of hardwood species, such as oak, hickory, maple, etc. It gives that same natural wood beauty offered by any hardwood floor.
Underneath, there are at least three layers of hardwood and plywood. They are placed in a crosswise position.
More installation techniques
Solid hardwood is installed with the traditional tongue and groove/ nail down. Concrete subfloors are usually avoided since these are damp.
Engineered wood flooring can be glued, nailed, or installed as a floating floor. Discuss installation with a flooring expert.
